What actual degrees are recommended for a career in screenwriting or writing for television, in general?
This is something that has been bothering me for a while. I'm currently in the midst of a major change in university and I'm unsure of really what programs I really want to be in to best hone what I think I'm best at. My previous major before the reconsideration was Film/Video with an emphasis on Animation, focusing more on the actual animatic process. This was chosen because my goal previously was, and remains to work my way to a position where I can viably pitch and write an animated series. Before I say anything else, I'd like to mention that you don't have to tell me how hard it would. Everyone else in the world has already. Over the past year my priorities have shifted more into writing over art, with my current plan involving attempting to break into the industry via writing for other shows before trying to pitch. I've considered switching to an English major with a creative writing emphasis. I just don't know what the people that hire actually look for in a writer. I should have specified a few things a bit further, althoug I don't know whether it will make a difference; the writing for television means more of the writing fiction and scripts and such for fiction programs in contrast to newswork or nonfiction writing; while I have done that sort of writing previously, I'd like to think that I'm better at creative fiction writing, without sounding too condescending...

- Writing for Television - i studied Professional writing fo two years to get into Journalism (Melbourne, Australia), as for screenwriting, i wouldnt have a clue... :P
- Journalism & Communication with a Minor in Film Studies would seem to make sense to me
