- did you get enough points on your ASVAB to be an aero engineer. Either way you have to pass a flight crew physical. Ask a recruiter
- Yo I'm 18 and you just jacked my question punk. j/k we're like the same people. I wanna do aerospace engineering and be a pilot but i don't really i know what to do either. I wanna be a Jet fighter pilot in the air force but you need a four year college degree then after you got to go to like air force pilot school for a year. So right now I'm going to CSUF (school starts 08/20) and i want to major in aerospace engineering, but they don't have it, not to mention anything to do with airplanes. So i need to see a counselor there and talk about it. I'm probably going to take the necessary classes for aerospace engineering and transfer to csulb. Let me know what you do.
- I'd go for the engineering degree. You can always become a pilot later. I never finnished college and although I've had a great flying career, that's all I know how to do. Think about being 22 with an engineering degree and still asking yourself this same question. But then it won't be a question of which one but a question of do you do both.
- If you love engineering for for that. You will end up making alot more money, you will have a normal life, be able to have a normal family with no problem etc.. Being a pilot as a job is not a career choice it is a life style choice. You can always fly for fun with the money you will make as an engineer you can get your license and buy a used plane, rent planes, buy a plane between a few friends. And later on in your career buy your self a nice new place. You will be much more succesful as an engineer. But if you really LOVE flying and cant imagine doing anything else than go for that. But if you love engineering to that go for that much smarter idea.
- John B is both correct and lucky... without any college degree, it is almost impossible to get a good flying job today... It comes down to what you want to do, and knowing that you could really do both if you went with the engineering degree, cant do that with a major in commercial aviation... also, you will make ALOT more money on average in the engineering field... Unless of course, like I said, you are lucky like John and happen to know the right people at the right time, then you can get a great flying job that will pay better than 95% of jobs out there...
- I have to agree with John up there. Aviation now has gotten so expensive and it is hard to find a bank (if any) that will finance it because of all the bankruptcies that are currently happening with it. If you have started flight lessons or have already knocked out a huge chunk of your ratings I might say go for it because of the huge demand for pilots out there (Look at Mesa Airlines). An engineering job would be more of a solid line of work and isnt rocky like the aviation industry. You can always get your pilots license later. But thats what I would do... Good luck!
- As John B said get the degree first you can always become a pilot later. That's what I did and I'm glad I did it that way because I didn't know how short my flying was going to be I was grounded on a medical problem. Looking at the last line of your question here IS a good reason to become an engineer, pilots starting out get paid jack!!! You have to work your way up the ladder to get to the big buck-a-roo bucks. At least as an engineer you will be able to make a living
