Should I spend big bucks to become a Personal Trainer?

I recently started receiving ads from a school called the National Personal Training Institute, telling me how I can get into shape and train for a career as a personal trainer all at the same time. The cost for a 1-2 year period is $5900. But I have a friend who is already a trainer who says that the test is something you can just study for and pass for a lot less money, and I can still get my certification. Has anybody out there heard of this school? And have any trainers out there ever gone to a place like this to get certified?

  1. That is ridiculous amount of money and I have never heard of them. Stick with NASM, NSCA, ASCM, or ACE. These are the majors and they are accredited, which is important. Don't bother with this other one. You can go get a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science for close to that at an accredited college.
  2. Stay with an accredited organization, and if you need one for work, then you need one.
