  1. Let's begin with training. As far as required training goes, there is none. Training comes down to personal preference. You should at least have a basic art class that covers drawing objects, people, and landscapes. The class should also cover shading and color. To fine tune skills, a class in the human art form would be a big asset. The best training come from trial and error and from copying the masters. One other class that might be helpful is a writing class. Learning how to tell a story is beneficial in creating a winning cartoon. Now, let talk about the responsibilities. Beyond creating the characters and storyline, there's the deadline. You must be able to work well in advance of when the cartoon will be published. You would be doing a Christmas cartoon in October for it to be ready to appear in newspapers all over in time. Other responsibilities include, keeping current on world events, changes in local and national government, trends, fashion, etc. These thing will affact you storyline and characters. You also need to be adaptable to changes in technology as this will also affect your storyline and characters. Your cartoon may need to be adapted to other media beaides a newspaper, so keeping up with technology will keep yor cartoon at the forefront. Other responsibilities include working on deadlines, character development &changes, storyline development & changes, managing your time, dicipline, and a good sense of humor. Most cartoons are designed to help us see the funny side of life, therefore having a keen eye and the ability to find the humor in everyday life is essential. Hope this helps. This information is from personal experience and from drawing two cartoon strips fro local newpapers.
