Personal Training Business Questions..?
I have a few questions about personal training.. I love working out and I plan becoming certified to train, but is this a job that can be a career? Whats the adverage salary a year that one makes with advanced certifications? Are trainers allowed to use a gym near them and bring there clients there if they give a cut to the company? Is having your own place with equiptment better only if you have a big clientel list? Any other info I havnt asked for would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! - Eric

- If you market correctly and have access to clients, the answer is yes. - You need to get a client base so your time is filled, then "hire" or refer out your "spill over" clients to them--take a cut of the session. That way you are making money when you train, and when someone trains for you. - some trainers starve while others make well over six figures. I comes down to your "business skills" and "marketing". - Some gyms allow you to bring clients in and pay a per session fee or a montly fee, depends on the gym. - Opening a place is a source of revenue, you can rent it to other trainers on an hourly basis. The key is keeping people coming in and out hourly. - Insurance is huge, get SOME ASAP! - Marketing material, business cards, web site...all helpful. - make sure that you have a steady source of referals. - Make sure that you raise your rates every year. It is acceptable in every business. - Be able to defend your hourly rates and differentiate yourself from other trainers. - get involved in every possible fitness organization to be ahead of the curve. - dont stop after 1 certification, get more, get a specialty certification--pre /post natal (example)
- Personal training can be a great career. Since somebody else did a nice job of answering most of your questions, I'll address just the salary one. The answer of course is it depends. But for some interesting reading, check out what personal trainers are saying about their own salaries. The range is quite dramatic and by reading the comments and attitudes of the trainers you can start to tell why.
