i need a second job... but i have some questions?

background: i just started my new job1.5 months ago. i'm off orentation, and the ladies who have the same job title as me/trained me say that i'm really good, i just need time to pick up on things, while other's on my floor at work think i'm horrible(for one reason or another, i really dont feel the need to list every last thing). so, since i need a second job (to be able to support myself thru school), i wanted to know: if i give my two trainers as references, will that make it okay that my boss and some other's dont have totally positive things to say about me? when they ask me why i want to work there, would it be okay to say: i want job security, i like the postive things i've heard about the the company, and i would like to look at all posible places/companys to further my career. i know i'm still new, but is it possible for me to go to an interview and get a second job? i work in the health care field, and i want to have a chance to get to the top of my field. some advice ? the other reason i'm looking at a new/second job b/c i wanted to find a better work enviroment, my job i have now is wonderful, and i know we can have all good days, but they dont want to give me time to learn what i need to know, they think i should know it all NOW. i love my job, i just want a better work place that is fair to the whole floor, not just the ones the bosses like. (my boss does play favorites, but that doesnt bother me as much, it happens, me and my boss have never truely had issues with each other) i just want job security and to pay my bills/go to school. how do i get that?

  1. I'm not sure what state you live in but most states have a law about what questions employers can answer. The questions are date of hire, date of separation (not an issue in this case), position held and rate of pay. They cannot say anything that may prevent you from getting the job, so they cannot say anything critical about you. I would give your current employer a heads up and let them know it will not interfere with the position you currently have. As far as saying you want job security nobody can really guarantee this so it may scare them off they would be over-committing to something but I would definitely express the good things you have heard and also do your research so you can quote things about the company. Good Luck!
  2. Okay. Welcome to the real world and let me give you a dose of reality. First of all, unfortunately there is no such thing as job security. You can bust your a** and a manager who decides they don't like you and turn around and fire you for absolutely no reason. Secondly, some places do not allow there employees to moonlight so make sure your present place of employment allows the employees to have second jobs. Thirdly, you will come across other jobs that feel you should know the job within 24 hours. Is this reasonable? Of course not! The fact of the matter is it takes upwards of 6 months for an employee to know the job and a minimum of one year to know the job like the back of his/her hand. Fourthly, if you use your two trainers as a reference are you certain they are not going to let you go? It is not uncommon for an employer to let go of an employee when they are seeking another job even if it is a second job. Fifth, it is never okay if you do not receive a positive reference. Lastly. Yes. It is absolutely okay to say you are looking for job security and an opportunity to grow and be challenged. Good luck!
