How do I become a guidance counselor?

I think, if my other plans dont work out, I want to become a guidance counsler. I have been told that i give good advice and am good at helping people out with their plans and goals. I would want to just do high school, to help with college planning and examining test scores and the types of students. I dont know if I would want to deal with a lot of emotional stuff, I may be better at it when I am older. But what type of school do you go to and what type of education is necessary? What are some specific majors in the field that would take me directly to that career? Thanks.

  1. For most states, you need to have a Masters of Science Degree in Counseling and Human Relations with a certification in School Counseling. It may be possible to get a Masters Degree in Counseling without a related undergraduate (Bachelors) degree, but extra classes will be needed. A Bachelors degree in Psychology would be very helpful. The following is a list of some courses, which may be required for a future school counselor: · Guidance Services · Group Dynamics · Theories of Counseling · Methods of Research · Counseling for Human Differences · Assessment Methods in Guidance · Counseling and Consultative Techniques in the School · Group Procedures in the School · Practicum in Elementary or Secondary Guidance · Advanced Practicum (Practicum is when the counselor in training goes into a school and practices what was learned at college, and learns from the employed counselor.) hope this helps!
  2. Usually school districts are looking for someone who has a master's degree, licensed in that particular state and possibly teacher certification. A bachelor's degree can be in almost anything, but a master's degree in counseling, counseling psychology, or educational psychology are a good degrees to help you reach your goal. School districts are always looking for someone like you to help their students.
