Full Careers

Is it common to become a police office/firefighter only for a few years?

While I finish my education, I want a job that can give me valuable experience to supplement my education. Do people enter either of the aforementioned careers only for a few years before moving on to other things? Is this unusual?

  1. being a cop isnt really a career...its a job. people use that job to lauch a career in something better...that's why leave after a few years.
  2. yes,
  3. I've seen several people come into the business 'temporarily' while they pursue their education..... then retire after 20 or 25 years. Some do only stay a few years.... only to go inot anohter LE or FD position somewhere else.
  4. no, it is not unusual, and it is common for people to retire after a few years. Many people have done this, they came into the force, and later they just left to go onto a different position.
  5. I had a Career as a Police and Fire Dispatcher 9-1-1, uncommon for someone to just do this for a few ywears. People get into a creer like this for just that ~ a Career. Once yo are forced back out in the Civilian World, after being in Law Enforcement, it is very hard!
