Looking for career change. I was a legal assistant for 20 yrs and am now unemployed.?
I'm feverishly trying to work on my resume but have reached a real roadblock with it especially since I'm seeking a career change into something more creative. I'm thinking of event planning (though I realize that I will need lots of training in this kind of work). I understand from all the reading I've done about resumes that one must have some accomplishments on his/her resume. Well, what if you don't have any accomplishments listed? I had jobs where you just listen to dictation all day long, type, file and answer phones and schedule appointments. Are there any legal assistants out there who feel they are or were stuck in a rut, became totally stressed out and bored with typing/dictation and found a way out of that field and are doing something altogether different for a job? Have those legal assistants / secretaries figured out what their transferable skills are and been able to successfully enter a different field of work that actually pays a decent salary?

- Your experience as a legal assistant will speak for itself. Twenty years at this job is stressful enough to make people look at you in a different light. Maybe explore the possibilities of secretary with a corporation, or were you looking to move out on your own?
- Well, I'm not a legal assistant, but I have been an administrative assistant and an executive assistant. The skills don't really transfer to any other fields. Well, there is medical/dental assistant and legal then regular assistant. But even in those fields in can be difficult to transfer from one position to the next. If you want to use your skills, but feel as though you need a change. I suggest looking for a assistant job with a company you find interesting. I'm interested in helping people, so I worked for a non-profit. I'm sure you will be able to find something that you're interested in.
