What are the degree requirements for a career in education?

  1. It depends on what level you want to teach. Elementary teachers (grades 1 -3) major in Early Childhood Education in which you take basic courses in all the subjects you will be teaching as well as Methods courses (how to teach). Middle Grades teachers (grades 4 - 8) take basic courses but also specialize in an area or two. Secondary teachers (grades 9 -12) usually major in the subject they want to teach and take Education courses as electives. All of these programs are followed by a student teaching semester in which you work with a practicing teacher and teach the kids in his/her classroom under his/her supervision and the supervision of university faculty. Please realize though that this information could vary a bit depending on the state you are living in and the university you attend!! The best way to find out which level would suit you best is to volunteer to work with kids at a local YMCA or school. Best of luck to you.
