What should I major in if I want a career in Education?
I want to be an Elementary school teacher, but UCs and CSUs don't offer an Undergrad Education Major, but a minor. So what major would best prepare me for a career in Education?

- Perhaps something in Liberal Arts?
- The best course would be to major in the subject you want to teach. English teacher? Go English Major. And so on and so on...
- I would suggest finding a subject that you enjoy. Or look at the classes required for the minor and choose something that compliments them. Elementary teachers need to be creative so you could look into some art classes. Often, the teachers are also the PE instructors, so you could check out some fitness courses, dance classes, etc. And there is no good Elementary teacher alive that doesn't need to outwit some of her/his pupils. Maybe you could look into (child) psychology classes. Can you just fulfil the requirements for a General Bachelor's Degree?
- If you're going for 7th grade or higher, major in your desired content area: math, English etc. If your aiming for K-6, earn a degree in psychology- and make sure to take plenty of adolescent psych. So much of psychology relates to the daily job- how students react, what they're mentally capable of, how to counsel, how the human mind learns, etc. I'd advise you to take a public speaking course, a drama course, and a basic business course (us teachers will never make over 100k so we have to be wise with our money).
- It really depends... there is a shortage of teachers with a math/science/ESL/special Ed interest. Any of those would work, but if you go into straight English (not ESL), history, more of the liberal arts route, you might not be in as high of demand.
- The answer "what you want to teach" has already been given, that is, of course, good advise. If you don't care check with several school districts and ask what they need. If you major in science/math/phys ed you will have a better chance at landing a good job.
