What computer career training is right for me?

I think I love computers, but I know almost nothing about them and I really and suck at math. However, I think I can work past a lot of that. Mainly I am an artist, but I am thinking of working in animation and new media which requires lots of computer use. I think it would be nice to be one of those geeky guys that can build a computer from a paper clip and two tin cans. Essentially I'd like to be able to run my own system, network of back up computers or render farm, and also fix some software issues and possibly develop software for learning games and video games. So basically fix computers in general and build them and be able to create programming. I've heard building computers is fairly easy. But what job title am i seeking and What degree or certificate would I need. Where can I go to learn this stuff? How long would it take to learn.? I did the art school thing, (know a little about photoshop, not so much Maya , but I can learn )and have a MA ( for what little thats worth). But would I need to get another bachelors in systems or IT? Or could I go through some kind of basic training program in less time? maybe a year or two? If I decided to work in IT what does it usually pay? What could I earn? big bucks would be nice. I guess my ultimate goal is to marry the technical and the creative somehow. I've been considering a return to school perhaps for a Phd in art/new media or education and technology. But the catch 22 is that I'd have to learn the tech stuff first. So I guess I need the best route to get there. And hopefully then I can double my income too.

  1. It sounds like a Computer Science degree is probably not right for you. That would be more so for programming. Although you do mention animation work, that would be more of Maya and PhotoShop. If you want a college degree program, I would get a BA or BS in Systems, or IT, depending on what your school of choice may call it. That will teach you the hardware and networking side. You can probably minor in animation or take additional classes for that. I am not aware of any programs that will teach you the hardware side and the "artistic" side of computers together.
  2. For your requirements formal education would be a waste. There are plenty of self-help books; HOWTOs and forums on the Internet which will teach you everything you need - how to assemble computers, install OS & software, build small networks, troubleshoot, etc. It actually isn't difficult at all and you can learn all this in a few months.... ++++ Captain Mail Virus / spam free email + IT security for SME www.captain-mail.in
