Would you submit your job resignation prior to a possible job offer?

I am really distressed at work. Received a not a great appraisal. Project pulled from my hands to another person. I'm being offered a 2nd chance to perform better under my supervisor's guidance. Honestly, I want to quit anyway. Finances not a major issue. But a nice time off would be nice to contemplate a 5 year plan for career change. Hate what I do, but desperately want to quit. My instincts have have pushed close to giving my resignation letter. I did interview in case I get the job, but don't know until today.

  1. I would stick it out until I not only have a job offer but a starting date as well.
  2. If you have the money, but you need to consider having references for when the new position opens and they need to call someone
  3. I personally would not leave a job until I have another one to go to. Even if you take some time off in between. But if you have a significant emergency fund with 3 to 6 months of living expenses, then you might take that time to look at what you really want to do and work very hard to obtain a position that would make you happy. I'm guessing that your poor performance (so says your boss) may be because you are unhappy in your work and you are not doing everything to be the most productive employee. It looks like your boss believes in you and your abilities. Try to refocus until you make a decision on your future.
  4. don't quit one job without having another 'sure bet' lined up.
  5. The decisions are independent. If you are stressed and unhappy and don't see any expected improvement, you should quit when it is convenient. Also, note that you don't have to accept an offer and you don't have to quit because you are looking elsewhere. Quit when you decide; work where and when you decide.
  6. It is usually better to wait until you have a firm job offer in writing. However if the workplace has become unbearable and you can afford to be unemployed for a while it may be the best answer to resign and really focus on finding a position that suits you.
