Some questions about the navy and navy rates?

1. If I were to join the navy and plan on making a career, would there be any point in which I could change to a different rate? Like after 4 years and I am up for reenlistment, would I have to reenlist as the same rate? Can I switch rates in the middle of an enlistment term, either way, how does the process work? Do you have to go to A school again? Do you lose rank? 2. If I were to join as say a navy corpsman, and during my time as a corpsman I were to go to college and learn another language like Chinese on my own, would the navy be able to reassign me to a language rating and send me overseas, or would I have to volunteer the use of my newly acquired language?

  1. 1. If you join the Navy and plan on making a career out of it, you are going to hear about several different programs. SCORE - Selective Converstion and Re-enlistment STAR - Selective Training and Re-enlisment Also, if you are in a rate that is overmanned, you can do a Rate Conversion to one that is in need of personnel. Normally, for that you merely take the rating exam for that rate, and when you pass, are converted to the new one. 2. This is one you will have to talk to the recruiters about. Ask them to break out the MILSPER (Military Personnel Manual) and look up what you can do with languages. I think that the CT rating (Cryptological Technician) uses them, and maybe IS (Intelligence Specialists.) Hope this helps you! See you in the fleet!
  2. 1:. MAYBE. there are three categories, CREO one 2 and Three. Creo Ones are undermanned ratings and it is generally easier to get permission to cross rate into one of these. Creo 3 is overmanned, and almost zero possibility of crossrating into one of these. If you are currently in a Creo one, you will NOT be allowed to crossrate unless it is into another Creo 1 . Near the end of your first term, you will have to submit a PTS packet.. where you indicate whether or not you wouldbe willing to crossrate if the Navy wants to keep you. the only time you can request to crossrate is at the end of each term or if your current rating gets merged or eliminated. 2:. NO. you MUST take the DLAB before you are eligible to go to DLI and crossrate to CTI, and they will not accept private language training. HOWEVER, you could request to take the DLPT, and based on your score could be given Proficiency pay and it would be indicated in your profile that you spoke another language, and you could find yourself tapped for an IA assignement.
  3. you can change rates if the rate you want to go into is not overmanned and your current rate is not undermanned. i've been in 18 years and wanted to change once or twice but never could because due to schooling, the navy spent to much money to make me what i am. on the language thing. some languages they have test to prove your proficientcy and if your good enough you will get some extra pay for it other than that, you wouldn't be reassigned or nothing.
