Ideas about the future?
Today I sat with my general manager at Chili's, who is regarded as a very big deal in the corporation, being the head chili's training manager, store opener, etc. We talked about everything about Chili's, especially me becoming a manager. I'm a 22 yr old college student finishing a business degree, about to embark on the world. He really want to start developing me into the lifestyle of being a restaurant manager. A part of me likes the opportunity, loves the potential pay (47K starting off, very good compared to most locals), I love the concept, and the culinary part. A person told me I should do what I love. Well, frankly, the thing I love to do is learn, via the internet. I spend countless hours scouring through google, youtube, wiki, cnn, etc... Can someone help me with some direction and foresight, as in some careers that have the above mentioned criteria, or should I jump into the rest. management opportunity? Should I just try things and say hell with it, or have a plan??

- if what you love to do is learn, you will be learning new stuff whether you go into management at Chili's or take some other career path. it might well take you until you are 30 or 35 to find the PERFECT career, so i say , go with Chili's now, earn money, and look for a way to spend all your time learning.
- Well you are getting your business degree so getting started as a restaurant manager might be something to look into. Now, you have to think of the jobs that you will have after being a manager which you want to be that general manager one day? What is your business degree in? Do any of those jobs interest you in that field? If they do then do a part-time internship to learn about it. You are young so if this restaurant management thing doesn't work out you can get out of it in a year or two and pursue something else.
- I think you should take the managership oppertunity and study on line in your spare time, These sort of job's don't come along that often, and with management skills that you will aquire with the job, the world is your oyster :o)
- May I suggest an excellent book: Rich Dad, Poor Dad, by Kim Yiyosaki. This book is a great example of what we need to learn about earning a living now & for our futures, as apposed to the way were raised and taught by our parents and teachers in school. You can change that for the better. I wish I knew about this book sooner, when my children were younger, but it really is never too late! Read this book and you will know what to do and learn next. Good Luck!
