People with career in financial / accounting field?

I am a finance major in college and plan to work as a financial and business planner, basically assisting people and their business with financial issues as well as create plans for them to manage their money. But I want to learn now about the career. So can you give me any guidance on what type of books, websites and etc. that I should be using to gain more knowledge on pursuing a career in this field. Also any activities I can do to practice and improve on the skills for this career.

  1. Think about after college getting some or all of these designations: CFP (Certified Financial Planner), CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), or even CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst - mostly used for investment analysis though). Many financial advisors that are good have a CFP - look at this website: http://www.cfp.net/become/ and good luck!
  2. I would like to suggest reading these two books first. The book Quarterlife Crisis introduced the problems twentysomethings face; the sequel Conquering Your Quarterlife Crisis solves them. Check out not for profits, volunteering situations and try them on for size so you do not get a jaded view and have stories to draw from when you are working with more influential clients later. Balance is key. If you are in it for the money, it will not buy you happiness. Even when you start out that way, the world of financial thinking can really effect your value system, so make sure that is in place first. State Farm, Allstate, most insurance companies are in need of people to sell their products. Banks are a good way to enter the field, as well. Many companies are looking for wellness programs a very "healthy" way to "help" people financially. Healthy people make healthy decisions. In interviews, ask what they would like you to do to be a solution to their clients. Karen Schultz
