What technology-related careers are available with entry-level competitive pay?
Hello! I need any advice I can get. I feel as if I'm stranded. So, I'm 27 years old, and I have been in the marketing research industry for seven years, at the SAME JOB. I have an Associates Degree in Marketing, however, I am currently pursuing my bachelors in Computer Information Systems. Why? Mainly, because I love technology, but also because I want a job that gives me good flexibility with good pay. I'm anxious to change jobs NOW, so I can get some experience in the IT field BEFORE I graduate. However, I'm afraid I won't be able to get an IT job, with no prior experience, paying what I'm getting now ($52,000 per year). I've been asking many people about this, and most say that there's no way I can achieve this because the IT field is not competitive anymore. Any suggestions on particular job/careers in technology that start at this pay rate, with NO experience and willing to train? Or something that will allow me to contract independently, with steady work? Thanks.

- I'm pretty sure an entry level IT position won't pay what you're getting now. And, IT itself is pretty broad. What do you want to do? I'm thinking that maybe sitting in front of a computer all day trying to fix other people's computer problems is not going all the satisfying for an ex-Marketing person. My advice - stay with the degree pursuit, but combine your new found computer technology with your marketing experience. Communications is an industry that is evolving DAILY - being a part of that evolution (or revolution) is being a part of history. Find something to do in the field of web broadcasting, cell phone technology marketing, even the eventual merger of cable and the internet - which is still only in conceptual stages. The challenge is - you'd have to make your own way. Everything is so new, there might not be a 'job description' for what your creative energy, experience, and education can bring to a company. You may need to do freelance consulting while redefining your career. I've probably created more questions than answers - but I'm VERY excited for you! Wish I was 27 again in this time - you're the kind of person that could be the innovator of the future of communication technology. Go get em!
