What should I major in if I want a career in the video game design?
Not nessecarily the programing aspect, but planning out the story, gameplay, mechanics, all that.

- Dont waste your money on a degree there are no jobs in this feild and many others. Dont you realize there are many people like yourself. Does it really pay to go to college? By the time the average student comes out of college they are more than 40,000 in debt. And for what? Does it really make you any smarter? No. Does it help you a high paying job. No. Check Monster.com the top paying jobs for entry level college are 25-35k a year. Wow I can be a truck driver and make more money than that (40-65k). Granted, there are exceptions to every rule- Doctor, Laywer, Engineer and maybe a few (a few) others. And if you are going to college to be Doctor, Laywer, or Engineer, thats great. But for any one else, especially elementary ed (no offense to anyone, I could have taught young kids when I was 15) or hopefully not art (what is the job placement rate on this job, like 1 to every 10 people). I hate to be so negative but sometimes it is tryly is a waste to pursue a college degree (again in certin/most feilds). My reccomendation to anyone thinking about college- Work a full time job while pursueing a college degree online. (Such as Penn Foster 1k per semester) Make money while getting a degree. DO NOT come out of college with a peice of paper saying you graduated and 40k in debt. (Unless of course you are going for one of the exceptions)
- This area is saturated. I would suggest Multimedia design so that, when you get out of college, there's actually a job available and you didn't waste your money on a degree you aren't going to be able to use.
- generalrop is clearly bitter about college, but he is right. There are thousands of people who want to work designing video games and not even a significant fraction of relevant jobs. The only way you'll ever make a career in the video game industry is if you've got connections. Unless you know someone at EA Games, Activision, Nintendo, Valve, or any other company that makes games I'd be suprised to see you becoming a professional video game creator. There are also groups of computer nerds who create games and put them out there for free (CounterStrike is an example. It's a mod of Half Life 2). But for every group who's at all successful there are hundreds or even thousands who go broke and disband. That being said, if you insist on going to college for it DeVry advertises a program/degree in video game creation. I'm just being realistic with you.
