Career options with degrees in CS and CEN?

I was wondering, I'm pondering going to college next season for either CS (computer sciences) or CEN (computer engineering). I'm looking into the future and trying to plan a route. For a while I wanted to do game design and programming, but after seeing the large amount of people that go into the industry thinking they can just play games all day and completely flooding it, I decided against it. It just feels like I would have to grind a low paying job for a while in order to get anywhere with it. I'm a very talented programmer and I'm also very interested in designing systems and building computer chips. I also don't want to be stuffed into a call-center at Dell, I'm looking for a career where I can revolutionize the industry, make an impact on the world, not just work a 9-5 job and live an ordinary life. What career option are available to CEN major? And what are available to CS major?

  1. possibly work for an engineer for HP or Apple
  2. They both have a lot of exciting options. Read some job sites to get a flavor of the possibilities and talk to an academic or career counselor. The real dirt is that with the CEN degree you are more of a heavyweight and can either be in the hard side of the field or move over to programming later. CS degrees don't let you do anything the CEN degree will offer you. You can always switch to programming down the road, so my first instinct given how you describe yourself is to go the CEN route. If you have good personal skills in communicating with others, you will be highly sought after too. Engineers are all good, but there are only a few that can do the people side of the business.
