Airline pilot career: College Vs Flight academy?
ok, so im a 17 year old highschool senior, time is running out and my dream carreer has always been to become a professional airline pilot. i've done some research and theres a couple of possible ways i could take to get there. i've narrowed my choices to attend a 4 year college or a flight school. the problem is that i need good advice on wich would be best for me. i've been looking arround and most academies (such as Delta connection flight academy) offer the training in arround or less than 24 months. vs a college wich will take 4 years and arround the same price but with a bachelor's degree in aviation science. so my question is, wich one will give me the best preparation, education and promise to get me hired with a respective airline faster? ps. if i decide to go trough a college, i am hoping to attend Bridgewater state college in MA. any additional info on that would be appreciated, thanks.

- The obvious choice is to go to college. You would get a better education of aviavtion. Although it will take longer it will pay off in the long run...literally... you would probably make more income with a degree.
- I am 16 and I also want to become a professional pilot. I've decided to go to a 4 year college instead of flight school. Most airlines prefer a college aviation degree. Plus, in a 4 year college(I'm majoring in Aeronautical Science) you can choose to minor in anything else you might be interested in. :) Well good luck in whatever you decide!
- Time is hardly running out..you are only 17! Get a four-year degree as that is required now by almost every major airline. Then go to Flight safety or ATP and build that time as an instructor in twins...I know a few people that started at 40 years old but they had a four year degree so they were way ahead of the game..I'm 34 and if I had a four-year degree then I would do it, but at this time I only get to work on them..
- Go to college.. Live the college life.. if you don't, you will regret it for the rest of your life.. I didn't go to a flight academy but im sure it would be full of guys who think they are all Top Guns.. College will give you the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, not just wannabe pilots.. Yeah, college may cost more, but you will learn a lot more than just how to fly a plane.. You'll learn life skills and meet women, which are hard to come by in the aviation industry.. honestly, both paths will take you to wear you need to go, but most employers will require a degree in the long run..
- Choose college over the flight academies. Don't fret about the major. Major in PE or physics. It really doesn't matter. You can save a lot of money by avoiding the big flight schools and heading out into the smaller airports with the Ma and Pop FBOs. There's a good chance that you'll actually learn how to fly too!
- Any college is fine. Don't get an aviation degree. Train for your certificates and ratings outside college, at local airports.
