  1. Great choice. My son needed a lot of speech therapy, so I'm seeing it from a parent's perspective. The speech therapists he's worked with love their jobs. Two were pregnant and then went on maternity leave and another had two children and worked a flexible week. It seems to be a career that is family friendly. Edit: SP can work for school districts, hospitals, centers of specialists, and in private practice...we've used them all. Good luck in your choices.
  2. Lots of opportunities to work; if you graduate from a strong MA program, you should be able to find a job in any moderate-to-large sized metropolitan area. Looking at the job market right now and the demographics of the U.S. population, I'd say health care is a promising area. Given the real financial constraints faced in health care, I'd say being a nurse practitioner (BS in nursing, MS in nursing) will get you a job anywhere in the country with good hours and something approaching a six-figure income after a few years. In addition, you could go into administration and make even more.
  3. I am a speech pathologist in the schools and I love it. I do have a large caseload and lots of paperwork but I am never bored. A master's degree is required to practice in most places but some states will allow you to work in the schools for a few years before starting a master's program. Speech pathology is a very rewarding career and you can work in a number of settings. Most settings offer part time positions so if you find a full time position is too demanding with your family you could go with that. In the schools I do stay after often but I have weekends and summers off which will be good when I do have children. Check out www.asha.org for more information about the field and a list of accredited universities that offer speech programs.
