More career questions...what to do??

I was thinking social work..I want to work with youth..what i really want to do is guidance counseling. But a lot of people have asaid those jobs are few and far between. At the univeristy I was told that I should get a teaching degree and then a MA in school counseling bc that would make it easier to find a job. I have no interest in teaching at all. Would a BSW in social work and a MA in guidance counselor help me to get into a guidance counseling position at a school? Does anyone know the hours you would have to work, or the pay scale, for social workers in school or hospital settings? Thanks!

  1. First off jobs in schools other than teacher are more competitive to get (there are usually only a few counselors for a school - compared to many more teachers). Your professors are correct that if you want to be a guidance counselor you first need to be a teacher (and in most case put some time in teaching). You are might want to consider school social work (get an MSW with a school social work focus) - it may take you a while to bet a job in the schools but you certainly can get a job working with youth.
