More career questions...what to do??
I was thinking social work..I want to work with youth..what i really want to do is guidance counseling. But a lot of people have asaid those jobs are few and far between. At the univeristy I was told that I should get a teaching degree and then a MA in school counseling bc that would make it easier to find a job. I have no interest in teaching at all. Would a BSW in social work and a MA in guidance counselor help me to get into a guidance counseling position at a school? Does anyone know the hours you would have to work, or the pay scale, for social workers in school or hospital settings? Thanks!

- First off jobs in schools other than teacher are more competitive to get (there are usually only a few counselors for a school - compared to many more teachers). Your professors are correct that if you want to be a guidance counselor you first need to be a teacher (and in most case put some time in teaching). You are might want to consider school social work (get an MSW with a school social work focus) - it may take you a while to bet a job in the schools but you certainly can get a job working with youth.
