When writing an objective for your resume, how do you know what to say?

I am applying for a Junior Accountant/Accounting Specialist position (within the company). I have been with the financial institution for almost four years and have moved up twice since I was hired. This is a lateral move for me as far as pay, but it's something new. I am applying for this position not only for a change but also to potentially start an accounting career. What do I write as my objective on my resume? Do include a cover letter even though it is an internal posting?

  1. try to tailor the objective towards the type of job that you are applying for.
  2. Yes, I agree. What are your goals? Why are you applying? This section will show the employer why or what you intend to do if you get this job or with career as a whole.
  3. I wouldn't include a cover letter with a resume for an internal posting, since that is used as a tool to introduce yourself; and at the company they already know you. But, if you want to include it then I think it would be nice. For the objective, I would keep it short and focused on the job description that you are applying for. Maybe something along the lines of "Seeking a position as an accounting specialist where I can use my financial and analytical skills to benefit the company." Good luck!!
  4. The objective in your resume should be like an introduction to someone who can help you-- it should introduce you in a way that presents your skills to someone who would want to hire you, in a way that makes them want to know more.. BAD Strategy for Objective is to just use buzz words that don't make sense. OR the template for what the word processing package recommends.. OR to present your objective in a negative light-- gotta find a job to avoid getting fired where I am.. :D
  5. Stress in your objective how you've been with the company for years. It shows loyalty. Briefly state why you want the position and what you will bring. Here's my rule of thumb when applying to any job: give the employer exactly what they require - no more, no less. Read the posting and send them exactly what they want.
