Is the PASS (Plan for Achieving Self-Support) program through SSA a program that helps you work?

I know it's about saving your benefits to achieve a work goal, but I'm confused about it. How does it work? Do you work a job & then save your SSI money & put it aside in order to help you work on your BIG time career goal? I'm not clear on how it works.

  1. Right now the maximum you can save while on SSI is 2,000. Also the most you can make without having to pay back part of your pay is $85.00. So if you get an SSI check for $623.00 and a job that pays $200.00 a month - you would have your next check reduced by $57.50. Instead of having your check reduced - you can put $115 of the money you earn into your PASS account. You get to keep your $623 + $85 of your pay ----and $115.00 goes toward your PASS goal. A PASS goal has to be preapproved and can be training, college, a vehicle (to get to and from work), a computer for work, business start-up capital - all kinds of things.
