I need university/career advice. Help?

I've been struggling over this decision for ages now. Its really affecting me because I'm so bad at making choices in my life. Its even keeping me up all night. I just finished college with four A-Levels in Maths, Physics, Biology and Design&Technology. Now I have to pick something study at university and make a career out of it. The problem is I'm a pretty smart guy, but I just know that I couldn't put up with having a regular job. I really want a job thats impressive and fun even if I get paid peanuts for it. I pretty much have to go to university because my parents insist so I need some course ideas. I was thinking of something with Drama because its unusual and would be fun but I've heard getting a job in that is nigh impossible. Is there anything else anyone could recommend for me to do? I don't want to go into a science/maths career, I want to be able to enjoy my job. Help?!

  1. Paramedic? (Sorry, it's what I'm going into so maybe I'm biased). It's definitely different, and your good grades could help. Good luck!
  2. GO DISCUSS IT WITH THE COUNSELOR----THEY ARE THE BEST SOURCES TO GIVE YOU THE BEST IDES THAT WOULD HELP MAKE YOUR CHOICES AVAILABLE TO YOU,
  3. Graphic arts, video game design, architecture, advertising...whatever you desire. It is difficult to get a job in the dramatic arts, but it depends on what you want to do. You could do lighting or set design or something that is equally as creative as acting, but may not be as hard to find work in. Figure out what you enjoy doing and try to make a career out of it in some way.
  4. Hope this doesn't sound like a slacker answer. I have a background in physics, math, and computers. I didn't get serious about my studies til my late 20's, and up until then, I played a LOT. I worked jobs that seemed like fun or that would just pay the bills, and I really enjoyed myself. In the meanwhile, not being paid well motivated me to get an advanced degree and pursue my career seriously, and now that's paying off, too. Honestly, I'd enjoy your early adulthood and follow your heart, with the caveat that you can't burn bridges--don't make decisions that will limit your future options. You're obviously a bright guy/gal, and that's not going to change. So long as you have the option of going back to U at a later time, I say enjoy yourself for now and follow your heart. You can always pick up another degree, but you can't go through your 20s again. Just my 2 cents.
  5. Go and see your career counsellor. In the meantime, get a few magazines & cut out pics of impressive people or things that would work for your dream job. Use your imagination & include even little details. Stick everything on a peice of paper on your wall & every day imagine yourself in your fantastic dream job. Im not kidding this works! I got a job on a cruise ship this way, with little experience. Turned out to be the best experience of my life! Give it a go. Best of luck!
  6. well if you are good at math and science you could program computers and well a job as a video game designer or work for a company like pixar. they pay well and the final product would be amazing. lol this is probably more my dream but still or robotics that is really cool and fun and well involves what you are good at.
  7. If there's any way you can swing it - my advice is to take a year and travel. The reason - what you need is perspective. Traveling will give you an idea of what you're made of. Chances are, you will surprise yourself. You'll find out how much more you can handle, and you'll meet people who do all kinds of things you haven't considered. There's nothing like wasting all that effort in university to find out your degree doesn't get you a job you want.
  8. Try freelancing. You set your own rules and time. Maybe start your own business. Do what you want but have a plan. You do realize that you can enjoy your job in a science and math or any other career you just have to find the right job for you. Whatever university you choose, they will have counselor's available to help you through your process. Also, talk to those in the field of your choice...they'll be happy to answer any questions you have. Good luck!
  9. Man, are you a "mixed-bag". If you didn't plan on going into the sciences of some kind, why on earth did you take the math, physics and biology courses? So if your parents have such a sway over you, why do you have a choice of careers? There's a blatant inconsistency here. If you want to "enjoy" yourself at your job, and you don't think that the theater is an option, then as I see it, the only thing left for you is "Design-Technology". Don't you think you could find something in that field that would appeal to you? Wotan
  10. Go to the career center at your university. They can give you different career test that will give you a few ideas of possible careers. There are so many cool careers out there the problem is you can't pick one you have never heard of. The career center can help a lot with giving you more options.
