How might I present my ongoing search for a satisfying career as a positive and not an inability to commit?
I have an interview for a position I don't know that much about except that it would be for a great company. My anxiety arises when they ask about my work history. It is all over the place. You see, over the last ten years, I've been a professional musician then corporate administrative assistant then high school teacher and now a freelance copy writer. How might I present my ongoing earnest search for a satisfying career as a positive and not an inability to commit? This job could be the one and I don't want to blow it! Also, it's over the phone. Is layed back better or worse than super upbeat friendly? You just never know what little insubstantial things will turn someone off especially over the phone. Am I being neurotic?

- 1. Yes you are being neurotic and yes it will come over in your voice on the phone. you must calm down. 2. Be friendly, if you don't know much about the position then you'd better start looking into it before your interview so if they ask if you have any questions you will have something to say. 3. Your various career choices have given you a wide avenue of experience, and now you want to settle down. highlight the experience in handling different situations, and lowdown on the actual amount of jobs. above all, do not sound nervous, just be cool. don't kiss butt, just say what you know, in a positive light, and treat it as a professional conversation. don't be thinking about oh my god am i going to blow it while you're talking and listening. bad bad. just be yourself, with a little confidence that you seem to lack. if you project it, it will happen. good luck to ya.
- Yes, you're neurotic, in a great way. It's like saying your friends are all married so you must be a loser if you're still single. Truth be known, the person speaking with you will envy your experience because they've been stuck in the same rut for years focused on making the mortgage payment at the expense of living their life. Be proud of the adventurous life you've lived and the many hats you've worn on your quest for a position that truly makes you feel alive and passionate. If you don't feel passionate about the position I'd keep drifting provided you can keep the lights burning.
