Making a career change into technical support?

Hello. I have a friend who has been a logistics mgr/warehouse mgr for years. He has finished 3 of 4 years of a political science degree. He is great with technology and I think he'd be great in a technical capacity. He is very patient and can diagnose a problem easily and help you find a solution. Perfect for a tech support type role. He realizes he would need to get some additional education/certifications to make this type of career change. A few questions: 1-He is unable to go to school full time. What is the most comprehensive certification to get him where he needs to be. 2-What kind of job could he get with the certifications? And what would starting salary be. This is in the Los Angeles area. Thanks!

  1. I would go with the Microsoft certifications. MCP, MCSE, etc. But why would he finish a poly sci degree if he is going to go into IT? Why not get the certifications, then the job, then finish his degree. I am all for education and achieving a goal, but paying the bills should be the first order of business. To answer your second question, he can try to get a job in tech support. Desktop services or tech support (Tier 1, 2, or 3). It depends on his product knowledge.
