do i need to major in music?
i am a highschool senior deciding what to do here! so um, i love music. i would really like to continue my education in music. i've been playing the clarinet for 7 years, i am student conductor in my band (i love it), i'm in my church choir and praise team, i love to sing and write music, i love performing (acting/singing/dancing) etc etc. however, i'd really like to major in business and go to a really good business school. i am strong in my mathematics area, i love creating ideas and ways to sell products, make money, organize things, etc etc. i want to either go into finance or marketing (still need to learn about my choices here) now, in my hopes of having a great future career, it'd be great if i could combine my education in business and music to work for some type of music corporation not only in the performance aspect but within managing and looking over financing etc etc... (i hope what i said made sense!) it is sorta kinda like living two lives, but not really..? ya know? s in continuation, should i go ahead and double major (i've found a great program Bachelor Music/Master's Business Administration in just 5 years) or should I major/minor? if i major/minor should i major in music minor in business or major in business minor in music? would a music degree truly be worth it?

- My story was the same as yours. I wasted 2 years getting a degree in music, then realized I was out of my mind and changed majors. You won't make any money or be able to do anything (other than teach) with a music degree. Focus on business and minor in music.
- You should speak to someone at your college of choice about your options. At my college there was an Arts Management program. This included a major in music, theater, or art, and a minor in business. There were also additional seminars in arts management along with required field experience. The program was fantastic--especially the field experiences, which gave me real world experience and job contacts. It makes sense to do the major-minor thing. In your situation you may want to major in business and minor in music. Good luck!
- Major in Business. I have lived what you are dreaming of. It was the best job I ever had. I worked for a music company doing every business aspect there was in operations, management, bookkeeping, finance, etc. When needed, I did concerts for the company (piano, organ and keyboard). The music business is okay but can EASILY fold when sales decline. Unfortunately that happened to the company that I worked for. It didn't fold yet but I was the highest paid and the first in the cutting line. Now I'm back into business only and just play music for my own enjoyment at home.
