Here is my solution (and Im a Liberal)...?
Pull our troops out of Iraq as soon as possible, bring them home and get ready to defend ourselves against North Korea or Iran if need be. Funnel the money being spent on the war to paying off the huge deficit. Reinstate the Pay-Go rules of budgeting. Tax any entity (person or corporation) making $1 million or more per year at 50%. Anyone under $30,000/year at 5%. Pay more state tax and less federal tax. Bring back states rights to decide on a majority of issues. Grant amnesty to illegal immigrants first, then secure the border, and then change quotas to get rid of back log. Completely separate church from state and eliminate religious tax exemptions. Legalize drugs in personal use quantities, stop fighting the war on drugs, and spend that money on education and creating career opportunities for people with low education. That is the short of what I think this country needs, Less laws and government not more. Whether you are left or right do you agree? What would you do different? 50% tax on 1 million dollars would be $500,000/year net. 5% tax on $30,000 would be $28,500. Which one would you rather have...making 500k and giving the government half, or only making 28.5k and giving the government a very small piece? Obviously you want more, so it would still encourage you to make more money and promote capitalism. The argument that taxing the rich isnt fair or doesnt work is a fallacy. It is certainly fair and would certainly work if politicians quit taking bribes long enough to fix the tax code and enforce in on the richest people in this country.

- did your parents drop you report abuse on me because this is not a question or answer
- i love u on this
- Don't agree. Especially on amnesty, drugs.
- We are polar opposites. If we bring the troops home right away, it makes us more vunerable for attacks on our country again. We cannot have that plus deal with North Korea. North Korea must be dealt with in a way we dealt with the cold war. If we tax more corporations, more corporations we go out of business -that's a fact. The only tax should be on outsourcing of jobs to other countries. The idea of tax the rich does not work, because it is always the middle class that winds up paying the burden. On some issues I am for states rights, and for others I am not. For example, Louisiana allowed the federal government to help with building a levy before Hurricane Katrina, then we would not have the disaster we have now. Sometimes, the federal government must intervene. I am not for amnesty as that what was done in 1986 and it just made our problem worse. I am for a country that is under god. Just because it is under god does not make it a theocracy. I am not for legalization of illegal drugs. It only works in the Netherlands as they are by-in-large a homogenous society.
- Cool!
- Tax rates of 50%? Have you forgotten who earned that money? More spending on top of already ridiculous levels of spending on education with no increase in performance? (see D.C. and N.Y.) Create career opportunities? You really think that is a function of govt.? In what world have you been living? Companies and economic growth create jobs, not govt. (except sham jobs for political purposes). Productivity gains do not result from govt. Why do liberals continue to feel that inefficient and wasteful government is entitled to disproportionately confiscate the wealth of those who achieve financial success? That kind of "Robin Hood" mentality is destructive. By the way, tax receipts are up dramatically following the obscene "tax cuts for the rich." The wealthy keep a greater percentage of what they earn, and government still gets to waste more tax money. A concept that liberals consistently fail to grasp. Additionally, higher rates can lead to lower tax receipts guys. Liberals never cease to amaze me. You could be proven wrong time and time again, yet you contiinue to ignore the facts (and history).
- I admire the fact that you're able to lay out your case without the name-calling or Bush-bashing that runs rampant on this site, though I disagree with you on a few points. My thoughts: 1. Pulling our troops out of Iraq before Iraqi forces are ready to take over security of their own country would only lead to disaster in the Middle East, as forces aligned with Saddam or Al-Qaeda would be able to take over. As much as we hate to see our troops attacked and killed, we must stay the course until Iraq can protect itself. 2. Raising taxes on profitable businesses and individuals to a punitive 50% would be disastrous to the economy, as it would discourage business investment, and as the affected rich stop investing and instead move their money to tax shelters or offshore, the increased tax burden will fall to the middle class, seriously slowing down the economy and leading to a possible recession. In addition, corporations paying higher taxes have less money to put into labor, resulting in lost job opportunities and possibly lost jobs as well. 3. I'm all for less federal tax. State taxes are up to each individual state. 4. Amnesty didn't work when Reagan did it, and it won't work today, as it rewards lawbreakers. 5. I actually agree with you about the war on drugs, at least as concerns marijuana (and no, I don't use it). This has been a colossal waste of time, money, and manpower. I don't understand why marijuana can't be regulated under much the same laws as alcohol. 6. "Less laws and government not more"? Preach on, brother.
- Okay, I agree with SOME of what you say, but not all. Here's what I think -- Iraq -- Yes, we should get out as soon as possible, possible being when Iraq is capable of standing on it's own feet. If we leave before then, we will only be destroying what we have fought for the last 3 years. I wouldn't even worry about Iran or North Korea. Iran is really just posturing, and North Korea won't do anything China doesn't want them to do, like attack their biggest trading partner. Deficit -- We should put as much money into paying off the deficit as possible, WITHOUT stagnating the economy. Taxation -- No more than 35% taxation for corporations and the rich, and preferably less, for two reasons. First, most rich people weren't born that way, they worked hard and succeeded. They shouldn't be insanely taxed just because they "can afford it". The richest 1% of all Americans pay 33.7% of all federal income taxes, even after the Bush tax cuts, while the bottom 50% of earners pay a mere 3.6% share, so in a sense, they are already being screwed. Second, experience has taught me that rich people will always have fast cars, big houses, expensive vacations, and all the other "rich people" things. But whatever money is left over after those and taxes, they usually spend on making more money. That means investing in the stock market, opening businesses, etc. Basically, encouraging economic growth. Corporations work pretty much the same way. The more money a corporation has after taxes, the more money they have to spend on labor costs, which allows them to hire more workers. They also have more money for research and development, marketing, and distribution, which is needed to keep them competitive with foreign firms. I do agree, though, that the government needs to be more aggressive in keeping tabs on corporate accounting practices. State vs. Federal tax -- No argument here. State's rights -- See above answer. Illegal immigrant amnesty -- A big mistake. President Reagan gave unconditional amnesty to 3 million illegal immigrants in 1986 in hopes of fixing the same problem we have today. It, of course, didn't work. I believe we should beef up border security ASAP, and institute some sort of grace period for illegals in this country to register themselves, and any person caught without papers after that should be immediatley deported. Religious tax exemption -- I don't think they should be taxed. What should happen to religions that refuse to pay? Should they be banned? I don't think so. It also opens the door to a lot of cases of perceived religious persecution by the government. You also need to consider the ethics of forcing people to pay to worship their religion. Drug legalization -- I think small amounts of marijuana, hashis, and certain other mild drugs should be legalized as long as they are only allowed in the home or certain designated areas. The war on hard drugs (cocaine, heroin, and the like) should continue to be fought, but smarter, not harder. Like you said, education is the key. We will never win the War on Drugs by attacking the supply, we need to place more emphasis on the demand. Anyway, that's what I think. If you are still reading this answer, it shows me that you are really serious about this, and I hope you will be open to serious discussion on this matter, because I think you are on the right track.
- Don't agree with you but at least you state a plan so for that I applaud you and think your at least better than half the liberals in congress....the plan does sound very much like a European socialist plan though...
