- I don't know much about this topic, but one aspect that interests me is the question about to what extent "special" people should be mainstreamed, that is, integrated in "normal" classrooms. Private fast track schools aren't going to take on disabled students. For a bright student, the richer the intellectual climate, the better. On the other hand, one's sense of humanity might be enriched by having such special cases arround. It's the public schools that get the "special" people. Undoubtedly the costs are tremendous, since money has to be poured into special services. At any rate, the issue of mainstreaming will be debated far and wide--perhaps even by you in your career paper. I'm not taking a position either way. Your thesis might state something like: Special Ed students can be better served by being separated from normal students in a school which is devoted to handling their special needs. Or the opposite position. (BTW, when I was in a public school we had "special" kids in our classes, but when I went to private school there were none to be seen. Out of sight is out of mind.)
- Appreciating and understanding special education is as much about "what it is not" as it it is about "what it is." Both concepts are important.
- You might want to further investigate the role of the special education teacher vs. the role of the regular education teacher. Both are now significantly involved in working with students with identified disabilities since the involvement in regular education and the regular curriculum is so much greater than in the past. Just a thought for you to consider. Good luck!!
