What Are the Best ways to figure out what career/education (college) is right for you?

  1. The ONLY way is to try it. You never know what you'll like until you do it! I always thought I would love psych, and I hated it. I dreaded accounting, and I LOVED it. It's just a matter of experimenting and getting to know yourself.
  2. You have to do something that your passionate about otherwise you'll end up hating it!
  3. Maybe you could try a career counsellor. They can give you some tests that might show you some directions that you can take your career based upon your skills and aptitudes.
  4. Figure out what you think you want to do with your life then talk to your HS advisor about what kind of a degree you need to do it and what colleges are the best for that kind of degree.
  5. I have two kids (23 and 22) and have just completed college myself after a 20 year navy career. Your best bet in my opinion is two-fold: 1. Go to the career center at your local junior college and take a career aptitude test. This test will compare your skills and knowledge with your likes and dislikes and suggest possible careers and degrees. 2. Think about the things that you really like to do, and then research what careers might allow you to do those things. You might be surprised what you find. Try to avoid just "trying" different things. College is expensive and experimentation may just prolong the process until you are no longer motivated. Good Luck!
  6. Farrah Gray, the young (but brilliant and talented :) self-made millionaire, asks this question about career goals, "What would you do for years and years to come and not have to get paid for it." Going for one's true passion in life. Perhaps similar to 'if you love what you do, you'll never have to work a day in your life.' Mr. Gray actually wrote a book called, Reallionaire. Sadly, his sister is going thru cancer right now as reported on a segment on 20/20.
