Is there any funding avilable for low skilled adults to retrain?
My partner is working 2 minimum wage driving jobs at the moment, 12 hours+ per day for £5.50 an hour and its a dead end. He started training as a Driving Instructor but had to leave to course as we could not fund it - the course allowed you to train now and pay later but he failed the credit score as we have severe financial problems and outstanding debts/CCJs. Because of these we were also refused a Career Development Loan by our Bank. The Careers Office have just told him that there is nothing available and short of winning the lottery he will just have to make do with min wage work. This can't be right in a country which is supposed to have "skills shortages" surely? We live in Wales. Is there any help we haven't tried? mr truth - what are you doing on here - you're supposed to be signing-on today! Off with you and pick up your giro! Your 8 kids need new designer clothing. thumbelina - sadly train to gain is not available in Wales, only in England.

- i'm not very sure but you could always go back to university and study a new degree wich will open up higher wage jobs
- I don't know but try this website. When I went back to college I was able to re-claim certain course fees, equipment costs, travel expenses & childcare fees. I think it depends on what you want to do & where you train.
- Try your local Adult Education Centre. The local Library. Job centre They are all there to give sound advice and help. They are very nice people. Go for it and good luck.
- I had the same delimma. Try a truckdriving school if you/he drives for them for 1 year it free. and he will make about $800 a week after taxes so he won't need 2 jobs. after a yr with a good driving record he can be a driving instructor and they pay well. I recieved my CDL in 05 and I love the job it's the easist job I ever had! Good luck.
- Ahhh I Live in Wales and I remember my Boss saying something about free training in IT for the unemployed. You might want to have a look here http://www.elwa.ac.uk/ElwaWeb/elwa.aspx?pageid=2942
- long live ladymoon, due to cheaper migrant labour costs, companies hire them more then people from u.k as it brings them greater profits.
- morning contact your local colleges, there are shortages in lots of the skill sectors, particularly contact centres, customer services and ICT. Speak to the colleges about funding to re-train. There are several projects like 'train to gain'. Let me know how you get on.
