Career at Sea?

I am pretty set on becoming a sea captain eventually. Obviously, going into the Navy is a good way of meeting that goal. I was wondering though, are there any other paths that would also lead to commanding a ship? (I don't neccesarily mean a military ship obviously, I would be just as happy commanding an oil tanker or a cruise ship or something) Any captains out there that would know?

  1. You have to join an institute in your country, that will teach you the basics.Normally, such courses are held in training ships. Then you have to take the appropriate examinations, conducted usually by the Ministry of Transport. Or else, you can join the navy, but you say you don't want to do that. And if you want to eventually rise to the position of captain, start off with the merchant navy, instead of the military. It may be difficult to change over at a later date.
