Is is possible for a Headhunter to find career in traditional HR?

I have about 6 years HR experiences (Organizational dev/employee relations/training & development). I just got an offer to be a head hunter. My career path is to specialize in T&D, Recruitment, OD. My 5-10 year plan is to be HR Mgr, Snr HR Mgr. I was wondering if about 2-3 years experience as a headhunter will be a sidetrack to my career goals, or would it be helpful for me?

  1. wow, quite an impressive skillset there... and excellent career plan... this is only a personal opinion and i think you should be doing some more thinking on your own... personally, i think an experience in headhunting will be beneficial to your career goal in the long term... it will give you the edge and experience in spotting or identifying talents... furthermore it will give you fantastic inside knowledge of the various industries HR trends... experience will help you reach your goals...
  2. It is a very interesting question. From a purely career-oriented perspective, I would not take the offer. I think you are sidetracking your path to a management level position in HR. The risk you are taking is the possibility of pigeon-holing yourself as a recruiter, which it does not appear you are interested in. I understand, of course, that there may be other considerations such as pay and benefits packages. That's why you must ultimately make this decision. Good Luck!!
