From development to system administration?

I am a communication sw engineer considering a career switch from software development to system administration and I wonder if anyone has experience with a similar change. For the last 5 years I have been working with dsp programming for telecommunications, and worked on various projects involving both design and implementation of embedded ip-network products, but my focus has been on low-level programming and optimization, mostly in the C language. Currently I find the programming itself a bit tedious, and I could like to have work tasks where I can have a more systems overview without going into project management. Looking back to school days I remember that I enjoyed system administration, but I feel that my skills are a bit rusty. Having saved some money I consider taking time off to do courses on professional institutes leading to certifications. Do you think this is a better idea than trying to get admin tasks with my current employer for which I might be mis/underqualified? Klayq: Well, I can not be sure of that of course, but the job market is good (Even though I have not updated my resume or applied for jobs I got a new job offer through a scandinavian recruiting site), and if I present myself and my achievements well, maybe 1-2 months for a relevant job? It is a good question and I do not know too much about my current job market status, so it is worth checking out by working with a recruiting site for instance.
