- I think I know what you are asking, so I will do my best to answer. I am assuming you are refering to child protective services/social services.. Most workers work directly with children and their families. The children usually come into states custody because of abuse and / or neglect. The child worker acts as an advocate/protector for the child and as an educator to the parents (to help the parents learn how to eliminate the abuse and keep their children safe). Sometimes the worker is able to work with the family and get the child back home. Sometimes this is not a reality and the worker has to work with the courts to terminate parental rights and help find a permanent placment for the child (this could be adoption or a stable, long-term foster placement). Skills: Most child and youth workers have a B.S. in social work. Work schedules: In my state , a worker works different hours depending on if it is a court day, if they have a paperwork day or if a kid is in crisis. It is not uncommon for a worker to come in at 7:45 am on a Friday morning and not go home until 1 AM because of a crisis. All of our workers have to be on call for one weekend a month (they have a pager and can be called out at any time , day or night, duirng their on call weekend). Technology: computer, cell phone and that's about it since most work is done outside of the office. Employment: really depends on the state that you live in but here there are many openings. Dress code: Jeans and nice shirt or sweater on regular work days. Suits for court days.
