What would you tell a friend to convince him or her of the importance of being proactive in one’s career development and finding an employer that is career development oriented?

- I think it's really what your Friend wants. If they are happy doing what they are doing, and don't want to move on in their career good for them. Many companies need stable competent long term employees. If everyone was "career minded" many companies would be in trouble. When/If your Friend decides to look for a company that develops their people, have the research ready to go. Until then, MYOB.
