Help with career/college path?
I'm a junior in HS and I 'm thinking about college and what I may be interested in studying. However, I don't know what I want to do for a career. I've tried searching for online tests to see what I might be good at but haven't found many. It's difficult. I might be interested in medical, education, writing, counseling(mental health), something math related w/o science involved. Is there anything that could help me with my decision or any suggestions? Also, I'd like to be accepted into a UC(University of California) college preferably UC Davis or Santa Barbara. Is it really hard to get into one of those schools? I'm studying hard this year and did pretty well last year, but in my Freshman year I didn't have a good GPA. Could anyone give as much advice as they can about college to me? What it's like, how to do well, how to prepare in HS junior/senior year...? Thanks :o)

- Well you have plenty of time to figure out what you want to do. Everyone takes pretty much the same classes for the first few years in college (General Education Requirements). Dont feel pressure to chose a path right now. Colleges look closer at your junior gpa than any other year so do the best you can. As far as getting ready for college, take as many college prep classes as you can so you can test out of college courses. College isnt extremely difficult so dont get all stressed out about it yet. Good luck
- The best advice I can give is to schedule college visits and then you can ask what their requirements are as far as what students they accept and what you have to do to be accepted. Talk to counselors at the schools and see what aptitude tests you can take to help you narrow down your career path. I think there is one called the Bristol, Meyer, Squibb test. Talk to teachers and students who are in the fields you are interested in. Also make sure you ask about scholarships that you can start working on now. Study, study, study for the SAT's or ACT's whichever you will have to take. The better score you get on the tests the better your chances are. You will also have to make sure you are well rounded. Being a part of a sports team is good. Also volunteering is good on a college application. Sounds impossible but people balance these things all the time. Good luck!!!!!!
- Most times, if all your other grades are good, colleges tend to overlook Freshman grades. BUT, all colleges are getting harder and harder to get into, so even things like that, that are usually forgivable, might limit your options. Anyway, never limit yourself to one or a handful of schools. Think about applying to about 10 places, including at least one that you're certain to get into. Oh, and, if you're looking for something that doesn't involve any science, you might as well forget about medical fields, and even counseling is gonna be a stretch. By the way, I think the person above me is talking about the Briggs-Myers Test, because Bristol Myers Squibb is a drug company and has nothing to do with personality tests. But anyway, like someone else said, there's no need to decide everything now. Once you get to college, go to the career placement office in your first couple of weeks after you get settled in, and tell them you want to take some tests to help you decide on a career direction. They'll be happy to help, and will administer Briggs-Myers and othertests that might even help you more. Good luck.
