What should I get a degree in? Assessments to help decide?

I have a pretty good idea of what I want to go back to school for, but I already have one degree that I don't use, so I want to make the right decision this time! Are there any websites, online assessments, or the like that can help me decide? Something akin to online career counseling I guess. Thanks!

  1. if you are thinking of going to a certain college or university, sometimes you can call them and ask them to help you decide before you enroll.
  2. Most of that online career stuff is just b.s. I think the best thing to do is talk to people who have different jobs and have them tell you about their work. Or, alternatively, you could look at different websites that are specific to a profession. For example, if you are interested in law you can go to the American Bar Association's website and look around there, they'll have a lot of career information and "day in the life" type stuff. I also have seen some pretty good stuff on the Princeton Review's website, as well as specific colleges' career services websites. I think the one at Brandeis University looked good.
  3. One type of assessment I found to be useful was a Myers Briggs personality test. One you can take on-line can be found at: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp It takes some time, but answer honestly and then do some research on your type (e.g. ENTJ, INFJ, etc.) The results page has some things you can read up on but you might also just try putting your type into a search engine and see what comes up. I think you will be happiest in any job you do if you match your interests with what your personality type is...that's how I choose law school. Good luck.
