why does the government dish out money to those on welfare?

I know here in canada, so many people are on welfare (and i mean single, 20 and 30 somethings) yet they are not being told to get a job at all. It is way too easy to get on welfare here. I was wondering what it is like everywhere else. One girl I know was 22 and had her own apt, and welfare paid EVERYTHING for her, even covered her beers on friday nite. I think this is totally wrong and that the govt should make these people get career counselling or go to work. Not fair that tax payers have to pay for others to live free. Any opinions? (and no, I am not talking about those who need to be on welfare, like a 16 year old mother, or an 80 year old woman or a disabled person)

  1. ya! its crazy! one person that my friends knew wanted a new car and they just filed a little welfare card like thing and got a brand new one, my guess is that the govt has soo much money that they don't know what to do with it, "ahem" ( like spending a billion dollars just to build a bridge in alaska that goes to nowhere) so yeah, just think about it, every time any money gets passed around, they get halve of it ... over and over and over again..
  2. Here in the U.S. I believe it is more vote getting and just plain laziness than anything else. I see a lot of healthy young 20-30 year old men and women collecting welfare. The sad fact is, they can live just as good on welfare and our Medicaid as to getting a minimum wage job and having to work for it. So why work if the government is willing to give you the same thing for free.
  3. I think the government may be too concerned about what these types of people may do if they don't receive benefits. The fear may be that they will turn to a life of crime and poison the rest of their society. Some where along the way they got ahead of themselves trying to solve a problem before it happened. I think there is a lot of that happening in America too. As for why they continue to feed the problem, well the sad truth is that not enough people will work together long enough to bring about a change. Hope this helps.
  4. It is far to easy for some to abuse the system and far to hard for others to get help when needed. In the province I live in it seems that if you can get on welfare you have it made. Yet allot of people need help , because they can't seem to get into the system. There are allot of abusers and no one seems to be doing any thing about it, even when they are reported. People on welfare should be made to work for their check. They can do all sorts of community service, like picking up garbage, volunteering at the local schools or senior centres, shoveling snow and keeping side walks clear,as well as submitting proof that they are looking for work. Also there should be time limits on your benifits like UI. As to why the money just keeps flowing from the government it's because they don't care enough to sit down and put some thought into it and figure out a solution to the growing poverty in this country.
  5. Why does the government dish out money to the big corporations? How can a bank, ie Royal Bank , make $4billion profit in one year. Don't they pay taxes, or just campaign contributions? Less of the former and more of the latter, I guess. The Gov. dishes out money to the poor, because the countries resources and assets belongs to everyone, not just the rich. Some people have a major problem accessing these resources, shut out for one reason or another by the rich and greedy. Not all people have equal IQs, not all people have equal physical strengths, not all people have equal ethics and morals, but all people deserve an equal right to life, or else it's dog eat dog and you're the next meal. I live in the country, 2 kids, no work on $155.mth. It's not a get-rich-scheme. I can't even afford to leave for some rich place like Alberta if I wanted to. I can't afford beer for sure! But without that $155/mth, I guess I'd have to go and TAKE it from someone, else my kids would starve for sure. Just like Afganistan, would you prefer that kind of environment? Could you survivie that? With all the money that this government gives to other countries, such as cleaning up the US's messes in poor countries, etc, you'd think that they could do better looking after their own population, give a guarenteed annual wage to everyone under a certain income level. Just look at the increase in child poverty here in Canada. Canada's humanitarianism is a joke and a farce! I can't for the life of me, see how our P.M. and cronies can have have the audacity to spout some of the gibberish they do about how well we Canadians have it. But they sure can give the breaks to BIG BUSINESS!
