Switching careers (something with kids??

I have a BA in psych and right now im an outpatient services assistant for a counseling center and a mentor/transporter coordinator. I hate writing people up and be in charge of so many things. I also HATE traveling. I thought about getting my masters so i could counsel but now im thinking i might not want to do that either because of all the traveling for conferences. Anyway i was thinking of going back to school to become an elementary teacher or something. I want a job where i can work with kids and not have to travel. what do you guys think? Also, if i go back how long will it take me to get my teaching certificate since i already have a BA? How do you go about opening a day care? Are day cares hard to start? Do i have to have a license etc? What do i do?!?!

  1. possibly where you are is ok, if it includes children that needed help, if you still need a stable lifestyle then hold on to that for now, as for teaching or working in school would be a good switch, with your BA , you're sort of half way there already, and would need teacher type training, but not much more, for day care, you wont need further education, but you may check guidelines and requirements in your area , check with local town hall, for any permits, it would be wise to have first-aid training, liability insurance, you want to be set up for a day care mostly, have a safe environment and secure, so the elementary teacher way may be good change, though you could check from where you are at, if theres any other job titles that include your skills and have to do with kids, read other answers, school requirements info http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos069.htm#training http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos069.htm ..
  2. Psychology is soooo fun!!! I am studying to become a School Psychologist. (I am going for my MA degree). With School Psychology, you can use your psych and your passion to work with little kids. The lifestyle of a SP, from my perspective, is very fun. You work the same days teachers work that is if you work in a public school (and you get much higher pay than teachers). That means summers off, weekends off, holidays off, 8 hour work day which honestly I believe is the best type of work schedule one can have. Being off during the summer gives you extra time to start of family of your own while not having to worry about being at work (and even though you are not working, you are still getting paid, plus, you get great benefits). I know a woman that is a SP and she works with elementary age kids. She tests them and sees what they are capable of, learning wise. During the next 5-15 years, there is going to be a big demand for SPs because the baby boomers are going to be retiring and that means it will be easy for us to find jobs. Because there will be a shortage, when can negoiate to get a higher paying salary. Also, schools will always be around, so we will never come to a point where SPs aren't going to be needed (especially with all the terrible things happening in schools these days).
