MSW or MS in Counseling Psychology or MS in Educational Counseling?

I am interested in making a career change. (I work in Corporate America.) I have a BA in Psychology and I am considering going to Graduate School. I can't decide what degree to go for. I am considering 1. Masters in Social Work 2. Masters in Counseling Psychology (and later applying to be a LPC) and 3. Masters in Educational Counseling (to become a School Counselor). What is the benefit of getting an MSW over a MS in Counseling Psych or visa versa? (Which one would pay more? Which one would led to more rewarding work or better jobs or more job opportunities?) Also, is anyone here a School Counselor - do you like your choosen profession?, can you tell me what a typical day is like?, and what is the average salary?) Thank you very much in advance.

  1. The MSW is generally the more versitle degree allowing you to work at multiple system levels, multiple populations and multiple roles. You can do all the same things you can do with the other two degrees (you can be a school social worker rather than counselor - school counselors tend to do more guidance work than actual counseling). As for pay in general the MSW pays better, but it does depend on the specifics of the job. Many LPC's loose out to MSW in direct job search options because the MSW has a more full understanding of human service systems and the degree is more respected. DA
