MSW or MS in Counseling Psychology or MS in Educational Counseling?

I am interested in making a career change. (I work in Corporate America.) I have a BA in Psychology and I am considering going to Graduate School. I can't decide what degree to go for. I am considering 1. Masters in Social Work 2. Masters in Counseling Psychology (and later applying to be a LPC) and 3. Masters in Educational Counseling (to become a School Counselor). What is the benefit of getting an MSW over a MS in Counseling Psych or visa versa? (Which one would pay more? Which one would led to more rewarding work or better jobs or more job opportunities?) Also, is anyone here a School Counselor - do you like your choosen profession?, can you tell me what a typical day is like?, and what is the average salary? Thank you very much in advance.

  1. consider LCSW
  2. Well these are three different professions and disciplines. Also the exact answer depends a bit on each school system. However in general: Psychologists work with testing, especially for special education. They may also do consultation. Generally do not do individual counseling or work with children beyond testing. Social Workers - generally work with psycho/social/family issues, in some systems work mostly with special education. Can run support/therapy groups, do programming and see families in relation to school problems. Guidance counselor - generally work with academic issues, college advising, and related elements, generally refer to social workers and/or psychologist for additional services. In some schools they will run support groups. Average starting salary for an MSW is 30-50K DA
