What is a hot career for a female? Something that companies or industries are in need of.?
My daughter is a female high school senior that is excellent in math, bio and chemistry... unsure of what to major in besides the long painful years of medicine. What other choices are out there for her besides Pharmaceuticals and medicines? I'm affraid she'll choose Business (MBA) major because that won't give her a good solid professional career and waste all of her smartness in math and chemistry. Please help!

- Nursing, Pharmacy, and Optometry. If she decides to pursue medical research, it will allow her to work in labs, large companies such as Kraft foods, or even for the government. All these jobs are hot in the future, especially now that baby boomers are retiring, in need of medical attention, or starting to pass away. She could even choose a degree in engineering. Engineers get paid very well right after graduation, and your daughter's excellence in science and math will allow her to excel.
- Sounds like you are focused on medicine. Anything with science or business would be a good solid career. The hard sciences pay much better than social sciences, and they are generally looking for females. But let her pick her life's love. As my Dad always said, "Life is too short to spend it doing something you hate."
- Wow, there are plenty of science/math teachers needed. Also try health care. Really any science/math degree should give plenty of job choices/opportunities in life. And she can still study what she likes.
- Actually, she can have an excellent career with an MBA. A career in marketing is very lucrative and in industry often requires an MBA in larger organizations. There are also a number of other opportunities with an MBA such as beginning in a leadership role and with passion and dedication moving into plant manager roles $100K + and add on bonuses. Other opportunities include degrees in Engineering which can move you in so many directions either in consulting or in industry--Supply Chain Management, etc. She will be most successful in something that she is passionate about. It just may mean exploring different ways to use the degree. Internships are a great opportunity to do some of this exploration.
