What are the "hot" new up and coming careers?

- Check out www.bls.gov, that is assuming your American. They have growth predictions on pretty much every job that the IRS knows about :).
- believe it or not, ASE certified automotive service is towards the top. Due to the computer controls involved and the older guys who are not interested are being weened out by retirement or ineffectiveness. If a person is mechanically inclined and has never injured their back seriously, I highly recommend this.
- This is not an informed opinion, but I would bet that the hottest careers in the future will be any that deal with the aging population or geriatrics. The baby boomers are getting older and there are going to be a lot of them pretty soon looking for audiologists (for hearing aids), doctors who deal primarily with cataracts and glaucoma (opthalmologists? optometrists? I never remember which is the right one...) and other related medical fields. Then there are other jobs like in-home nursing care, people who do home modifications for the elderly like bathrooms, kitchens, wheelchair ramps, etc. Just a guess.
- Automatic Machine Control Engineer. I think it's the new technology and it will be widely used within the next decade.
- Here are some of the occupations for which labor economists predict the fastest growth in the coming 10 years. Note that not all positions require a college or graduate degree, although that helps to ensure your future employability. Some fields are on the list as they are growing at an unusual rate. Check out the list on the link below.
- Richard Samson wrote about careers in the upcoming economy that will require "hyper-human" skills: creativity, sensitivity, empathy, etc. Richard Koch, author of The 80/20 Individual, talks about our entering the age of Individualism, where individuals (the talented ones) will matter more than corporations. To relate this to your question, I would say that "hot" and lucrative careers will be at companies where you can see a high concentration of very smart and very talented people. (e.g. consulting firms, investment banking, etc.). From my own research as an intellectual capital consultant, I would say that the hot new careers will be where a very smart person sits in front of the Web and manages the flow of intellectual capital, knowhow, expertise, etc. across oceans and continents. That is, the best careers will be where Talent + Technology gives the person an incredible edge, because his talent is amplified by Web technologies and also super-marketed to a potentially limitless market worldwide. These folks usually make 16 times the salary of their peers. It's the Talent Economy! (P.S. Bill Gates said that if the 20 top people at Microsoft left, the company would become very unimportant. The message is that there is no future in any job. The only REAL future (and money) lies in the talented individual.)
