Am I too old for cosmetology school?

I am a mom of two teens; have attended some college but no degree; and am considering changing careers. (I currently work for a municipality.) I am rather limited in what I can do - other than clerical/administrative assistant positions. Do you think this is too late in life for me to do? Would I have a difficult time finding work at my age? I know many adults who are returning to school for various career changes in mid-life. Would I feel out of place at a beauty school learning with high school/college age young women? Thanks for sharing your thoughts....

  1. You are never too old! If you want to go to cosmetology school, then don't let anyone talk you out of it! Good Luck!
  2. If there's a will, there's a way. =)
  3. i don't think your to old. Haven't you heard about the women going back to school in their 90s they are brave women and maybe out of their element but they did and their glad. go for it!
  4. You're never too old. There was an 80-year old lady that graduated from college a few years ago. Find something you love to do... and if it makes you happy, just GO FOR IT! You are being called for whatever purpose in life -- if your inner self is telling you something, you need to listen. Good luck!
  5. no depends which school college to go.
  6. It's not too late. You will be able to get along with the other younger students. I think the one factor you need to give serious thought to is retirement. If you have worked in one place for a long time, you have been steadily building up to the 30-or-so years that you need so that you can go retire (and get good benefits and retirement payment). If you start off in cosmetology school, you will in essence be starting all over again, so you will sort of be throwing out the years that you have been working towards the 30 years that you need to retire. Then you might be really old before you get to retire.
  7. I went to cosmetology school when I was 18. Several women in their 30's and 40's were attending the training while I was there. They seemed at ease with the customers at the beauty school and had no problems with the academic part of it. They had such specific plans, like opening their own shop or working for a certain salon. I admired them. You might be surprised to find there are many "older" people attending cosmetology school with you. You must have talent to be successful in the beauty business, no matter your age. It is a very physical job compared to clerical work. Earnings can be above average if you have a lot of patrons.
