Career Change?

Should I change Careers? Currently I teach art in an elementry and middle school. I thought I would love teaching, but after two years, I don't. I hate dealing with behavior problems, the pay is pitifual and I would like to at least move out of my parents house, and I hate having to be a "preformer" and "on stage" everyday. Lastly, I really want to make art, but by the tine I'm trrough planing, preping, and cleaning at school I'm to exhusted to have a life or make art. Sometimes I feel like my classroom in a prison cell. The thing is, i'm a thesis away from a Master's in education. I don't have many other skills to find a job with, but toying around with the idea of going back to school and getting trained (not another degree, i alread have enough of those)as a web/print graphic designer. I don't know if I want to take on more debt, but I also know I don't want to teach k-12 forever. What advice would you give?

  1. Could you take your passion and skills and turn them into a lucrative business? If you have a market that wants your ideas, you should go for it! I decided to own an on-line travel agency with a really great company. the huge shift of people booking travel on-line and the fact that one baby boomer is retiring every 8 seconds was enough to show me that there is a market for my services. My prices are VERY competitive with the other on line booking sites (often cheaper) and its not hard directing traffic to my site (hand out business cards, flyers, on-line ads, lettering on my van...). I love what I do! One of the key things is finding something that you love! Good Luck!
  2. I am 50 years old and have changed careers twice. And finished a different master's degree to do it. Nothing is worse that not enjoying your job. You spend the greater part of your time doing it.....and working is not optional for most of us. I also learned with a few years or real life under my belt that if I have to put in at least 40 hours a week of my life (sweat and blood too), I'm going to get PAID for it. Go for it! Time is going to go by whether you do it or you don't do it. So you can be 30 with a job you like or 30 and one more of the abundant burned out teachers.
