career change?

My g/f who is 20 yrs old works in a factory as a packer but recently is thinking of a career change because she's bored of doing the same old thing every day and fancys a more rewarding and challenging job. She wants to get into working with the elderly as a care assistant or something similar. Her main worries is she has no experience and only left school with her GCSE'S. How could she get a job doing this and to make her career move sucessful? Most places want experience so its hard for her to get a stepping stone into this career. Where should she start, what should she do. She really wants to do this. We live in Wolverhampton,West-Midlands,UK in case you need to know.

  1. Distance learning. She can do vocational self study courses during the evenings and weekends and within months will be able to get a better job. OR she can leave her factory job to work as a sales girl. She can do that for 6 months and then move onto recruitment consultancy. Trust me, if she becomes a recruitment consultant, she shall be earning £££££
  2. She should start by finding what the actual requirements are. She may need to be trained and/or certified before working in elder institutions. If she can't get hired on training alone, The next step would be to gain some experience by working in a related field.

  4. Your girlfriend needs to contact the Careers Service (now known as 'Connexions') in Wolverhampton. They are brilliant and will sit down with her and explain how she could work with the elderly. 5. She can certainly start as a care assistant in a home for the elderly. Most people who do this have little or no qualification, and there are always places who will take people with no experience. Then she can go from there. If she likes it, the home may encourage her to do an NVQ or similar.
