Career Change?
I think I'm desperate for a career change! I spent about 18 years in the Air Force before separating due to a disability. I am a contract negotiator and have a very good job and it pays very well. The problem is, I'm soooo unhappy. I've been out of the military for less than 2 years and I'm on my third job. Granted it is a good one, but nothing provides that structure, discipline and Comraiderie like the military. I don't know if I miss that, or if I'm just completely bored doing contracts and purchase orders.... The trouble is, my job pays very well....Can't afford a paycut....any thoughts on what I can do to make my career path better? I'm highly skilled at various things and have always wanted to have a career in public speaking of some sort....what do I do???

- I think you have two options: 1. Get a more interesting job and take the pay cut. Live through your job and get a lot of satisfaction. 2. Stay with the job you have (because you need the pay), Start something "on the side". This could be a hobby, work for a charity or even start a small business. Anything that gives meaning, satisfaction and makes you happy. Give it some serious thought about what really interests you and what you would like to do.
- hmm. I'm in a very similar situation. Sorry I can't really give you clear answers since I'm looking for that answer myself. I used to love programming, but something happened and I just can't motivate myself to do the work anymore. (yeah, having to compete with people from India who are willing to work for a few bucks per hour is what happened). Just like you, I would like to try something else, but this kind of jobs I could find around here. I would be so happy if I could do something that I'm passionate about. Something that matters, not just lining rich people's pockets with cash. I know what you're feeling.
