career dilemma-please solve?
Question Details: Hi, I am a 18 year old 12th passed student, currently I am preparing for various engineering entrance exams such as IIT JEE, AIEEE, etc. But I want to pursue a career according to my APTITUDE, PERSONALITY, INTERESTS and CREDIBILITY (in the sense of earning money) unlike many others who just blankly select a career which others tell them to or which is tried and tested (e.g. engg, mba, etc) .Unhesitatingly I would like to make it clear that I want a career in which there is sure shot success (of course hard work is essential) and I can earn loads of money. APTITUDE- Talking of my aptitude and academic performance, I was always an above average student securing 85% in 10th and 75% in 12th .My strongest subject is science and while unexpectedly I am weaker in maths and English, my other strong subjects are computer science and geography. PERSONALITY-Frankly speaking I am really a shy guy. But I work very much hard and smart in whatever responsibility is given to me. Some of my personality attributes are assertiveness, self-confidence, ethics, sharpness and perfectionist. I want to pursue a career in which these qualities are required. INTERESTS-I want a career somewhat related to science. I have active interests in computers. I also need to pursue a career in which I can surely make money just after completing my studies (as loan repayment) because I belong to economically weaker family. My present aim is of becoming a B.Tech (Probably in computers). Is it in accordance to my above stated qualities. Should I pay more importance to subjects like maths, English in which I am weak and which are extremely important for this career OR I should choose a different career? PLEASE SUGGEST ME an appropriate career considering above into account. I will be extremely grateful if you help me in solving this huge career dilemma. Waiting for your reply anxiously. Yours faithfully, Saurav agarwal Email-sauravemail@gmail.com

- If you're weaker in math, engineering may not be a viable career for you. Being strong in computer and geography suggest you may be good and happy in the travel business. I do not know where you live (your name indicates India or Pakistan? Britain?) but the travel industry is getting huge almost everywhere in the world and you may want to check it out. Your shy personality may not be best suited for jobs that require a lot of face to face customer contacts but you certainly and plan tours and handle a lot of the sales and customer support work on-line. Check out schools/colleges that train people for the travel/hotel industries and visit a travel agency and see how they operate. If you love your work and are good at it, you'll most likely make money. To select something just because it's known to be a money-making career may not be the best for you. You may not like it or be suited for it and you will not make much money at the end...
- Dear Saurav, As you already expressed your desire in science and you scored good in those subjects, i think you should go for integrated MSC subject in science (like physics, Chemistry or Math) from IITs or any other premier institute. Since then you would be able to decide what you want to do in future. As you also explained that you are from poor family background, you can do the job just after completing in your post-graduation in IT industry or and then after getting some work experience you can go for either PHD or MBA in your preferred stream then. but whatever you choose, do it with proper concentration and effort. At that time, don;t compare your stream with others. Otherwise you would get confuse and loose your vision.
- I really admire your long sightedness in choosing your career.Your decision making style implies that you are a very rational person and can handle responsibilities perfectly. Thanks for being outright in telling about your weakness and strengths. When choosing your career it is better to look into the following factors. 1. Personal Interest 2.Convergence with your life's Ambition 3.Familiarity with the field. 4.Adaptability You have mentioned your interest as computers. Here you have options you can either become a sw engineer and realise financial benefits earlier or become a multimedia specialist and wait for your time.It is not that many siply plunge into Engg studies because others say , thay also see oppurtunities .But for you to pursue a career as a Sw engg , you have to work really hard in maths. It is not only the branch that counts today but also the college in whicgh you study...
